Change Operator, Not Number

The supervision agency for cell phones, SUTEL, has promised that early next year or even late this year, Costa Ricans can change operators without having to change their phone numbers.

Bids will be accepted by SUTEL in "not later than August" and the winning technology company will then have three months to install the system and another month to make tests, SUTEL says.

Right now, SUTEL and the Numerical Portability Technical Committee are ironing out details of how the process can be accomplished. SUTEL will choose the company to change the current system and the committee will be charged with writing the contract.

Currently, if one decides to change operators, there is no way the user can retain his cell number.
